Wimbledon strawberries and cream is an iconic tradition synonymous with the prestigious tennis tournament held annually in London. The combination of fresh, juicy strawberries and rich, velvety cream has been enjoyed by spectators and players alike for over a century.
Wimbledon Strawberries and Cream History & Facts
The traditional Wimbledon strawberries and cream is a simple yet beloved British summer dessert consisting of fresh strawberries served with cream, typically single cream—a pourable milk product with lower fat content than double cream. The cream is not whipped and is served cold, poured directly over the strawberries.
For the Wimbledon 2025 Championships, the price for a portion of strawberries and cream is £2.70, reflecting a modest 20p increase from the previous £2.50. This marks the first price rise since 2010.
Why are strawberries and cream served at Wimbledon? For one it’s the perfect summer offering: Strawberries are in peak season during the tournament each year, and the simplicity of the dessert underscores summer’s freshness and British tradition.
It’s also rooted in historical tradition. One popular origin story traces back to Cardinal Thomas Wolsey, who reportedly served strawberries and cream to King Henry VIII (who lived near Wimbledon at Hampton Court). After the King’s enjoyment of the dish, it gained popularity among the aristocracy.
Wimbledon has served strawberries and cream since its inception in 1877, trusted as a refreshing Victorian-era summer treat.
