Tailgating isn’t just for stadium parking lots anymore. It’s where people gather for food and some football, and in downtown New Orleans, the happenin’ spot on college football Saturdays this fall is Avenue Barbershop. That’s because its owner, Karanja Lipscomb, has a son who plays wide receiver at Vanderbilt, and Lipscomb is a multi-tasker. Saturdays mean big business – both for football and for barbers.
The Nashville newspaper, The Tennessean, featured the family of Vanderbilt freshman wide receiver Kalija Lipscomb and the New Orleans barbershop where his father cuts hair while cheering his son on with the Commodores. You can read it here. Kalija is only a freshman, and he’s made two catches including a touchdown, so the party is just getting started, but more than 80 people showed up to watch his first game against South Carolina.
It ought to be hopping on Saturday when Vanderbilt travels to Atlanta to play Georgia Tech, resuming an old rivalry when Tech and Vanderbilt were both powerhouses in the 1920s. Pass the gumbo!
