Super Bowl week is about more than what happens on the field between the NFL’s top teams, it pits the culture of the competing cities against one another. In our 2021 Super Bowl Food Showdown, we’re highlighting a pair of unique menu items locals from Tampa and Kansas City swear by.
Big Ray’s Lobster Corndog
Does this Unique Corndog have Home Field Advantage?
Tampa Bay’s got a few things going for it. Great beaches, great football (in recent times), and great super bowl food, to name a few. While this year’s Super Bowl host has lots to brag about, what we’re most jealous of is this Lobster Corn Dog from Big Ray’s Fish Camp.
I mean come on now! This local dish is beloved by neighbors and visitors alike and draws crowds year-round. What’s not to love about a split lobster tail deep fried in corn dog batter?
Big Ray’s is the brainchild of local chef Raymond Cruz who grew up fishing with his grandfather on the same Ballast Point Pier that now anchors his counter-service shop. If you’re in the area, you can order online.
Joe’s Kansas City Bar-B-Que
Brisket and Pigskin — What Kansas City Does Best
Over in Kansas City, things aren’t too shabby on the food front either. In a city renowned for its barbeque, one spot stands out. Like Ray’s, Joe’s Kansas City is as popular amongst the locals like Paul Rudd as it is the passers-through.
If we were forced to pick just one thing on the super bowl food menu it would have to be the “Z-Man,” which you can have shipped out of state, or order to go. This sammy’s got layers of smoked brisket, smoked provolone, onion rings, and BBQ sauce stacked on a Kaiser.
The Z-Man furthered its legacy in Kansas City in 2013 when both the visiting Twins ordered 50 of them for the clubhouse. They beat the Royals 7-0. The next day the home-team received 51 Z-Man samdwiches from Joe’s. They won 5-2 over the Twins.
